These materials focus on information about the Labour Market. They review the importance of labour market information (LMI) in career and employment practice, as well as reflecting on how can you find high quality, robust and current LMI, and then make sense of it.
We know that some of you will have considerable experience in using LMI – others will have little or none. Don’t worry – the materials have been designed for learners with all levels of previous experience.
Please note that we are mainly using data and tools from the UK. But if you have access to data tools for other countries feel free to use them and please share them with us!
LMI is important because without it, careers advice or advice to jobseekers is just that, it’s advice. LMI helps careers advisors, work coaches and employment advisors to understand the dynamic interplay between supply and demand in fast changing labour markets.
LMI helps policy makers and planners develop strategies for the labour market in the future, and course designers and curriculum developers consider the skills that will be needed for those embarking on education and changing programmes.
We distinguish between Labour Market Information and Labour Market Intelligence; Labour Market Information refers to hard data from original and official sources like National Statistics Offices, whereas Labour Market Intelligence is the interpretation and contextualisation of these data. It’s Labour Market Intelligence with which most practicioners in careers guidance and public employment services are mostly dealing.
